EASTANOLLEE - A Northeast Georgia man is raffling his house for $105 a ticket. But part of the proceeds from this raffle will go towards a charity that helps those down on their luck. In this week's Georgia Journey, WNEG's Amelia Hines takes us to Eastanollee.
"I'm a home inspector and I do odd jobs for people but work has been really slow." Slow because of the economy. That same economic situation is why this home that sits on five acres of land has been on the market for two and a half years. "We thought we had it sold two or three times but people ended up backing out because the recession and all." That's when Dyer discovered there was another way to sell his house. He could raffle it through a non profit called "Seed Sowers."
By selling tickets for $105 each, he could get rid of the house and the charity could get thousands of dollars to help single parents, those with special needs, and families in crisis. "I know that would be the only way we could get rid of it."
But the house isn't the only prize. If you buy your ticket by the first of the month, you're eligible for what's called the "Early Bird Drawing." That prize is worth $1,000. One woman from Marietta won the drawing for September when she needed it most. "The lady who won the first early bird drawing, just got laid off last Friday."
Dyer says that while this raffle seems too good to be true, it is not a scam. They are registered under the Habersham County Sheriff's Department as a legitimate raffle. "You know for $100 someone's gonna win a nice house." The drawing will be on November 1st. If the raffle doesn't attract enough people willing to buy a ticket, the house will not b given away and Dye will have to put it back on the market. But half the money raised will go to a ticket buyer and the other will go towards "Seed Sowers".
