ATHENS - The superintendent of Clark County Schools is asking the Board of Education to not require any additional furlough days for certified teachers during the second semester of the 2009-2010 school year. Phillip Lanoue says any additional furlough days would have a "considerable negative impact" on instruction.

FROM THE CLARKE COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM:

Athens, Ga. – Superintendent Philip D. Lanoue is requesting that the Board of Education not require additional furlough days for certified teachers in the second semester of the 2009-10 school year. Governor Sonny Perdue’s proposed amended FY2010 budget includes a revenue reduction to school districts reflecting an additional three-day furlough for teachers. Lanoue is recommending to the Board of Education, who will vote on the recommendation Thursday night, that the district absorb the $960,000 rather than institute teacher furloughs.

“Given that our teachers have already been required to take three furlough days this school year, I recommend we absorb this amount in our fund balance.” said Lanoue. “In addition, additional furlough days would have a considerable negative impact on instruction. Therefore, I am recommending that we not furlough an additional three days as anticipated by the Governor’s reductions.”

In addition to $960,000 in cuts, which take into account reductions in state revenue and the resulting reductions in local revenue, the proposed amended FY10 budget includes an overall 3% revenue reduction of approximately $1.5 million – for a total of $2.5 million in cuts to the district’s budget. This amount will be absorbed by the district’s fund balance, which would reduce to approximately $9.94 million.
“I commend our teachers for their hard work and dedication,” said Lanoue. “While economic times are difficult, I recommend that we finish our school calendar as planned – without any additional furloughs.”

With 22 schools and over 12,000 students, the Clarke County School District offers students both diversity and a culture of academic excellence. Graduating students annually receive an average of over $3 million in scholarships, not including the HOPE Scholarship. Students regularly receive top honors in regional and national academic, artistic and athletic competitions. For more information, visit www.clarke.k12.ga.us.
